and National Science and Technology Council
Taiwan Computer Assisted Language Learning (TaiwanCALL)
1. Overview
The Taiwan Pedagogy and Practice in Technology-Enhanced Language Learning Association (formerly known as PPTELL, now Taiwan CALL since 2024) was established with the aim of integrating language teaching theory and practice, fostering experience exchange and collaboration among scholars and educators in the fields of Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) worldwide. The association was initiated in November 2019, with Professor Liao Mei-Ling from National Taichung University of Education serving as the founding representative. The inaugural meeting was held in July 2020, where Dr. Lan Yu-Ru was elected as the first president of the association.
2. Past Conference
In June 2021, the association co-organized the 2021 International Conference with National Taiwan Normal University, which was held both in-person and online to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference featured keynote speeches from renowned scholars and included panel discussions and technology demonstrations. The event attracted over 100 scholars and experts from around the world, discussing the application of technology in language teaching. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the 2022 conference was held entirely online from July 1 to 3, with the theme "Developing Learner Agency through Smart Technology." The conference invited 29 international and domestic experts as reviewers, with participants from countries including the United States, China, and Australia, and provided opportunities for outstanding papers to be submitted to *Educational Technology & Society*.
In 2023, the conference was held in-person at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, marking the first physical event post-pandemic. The theme was "A Fairy TELL on EMI," and the event featured several keynote speeches and expert roundtable discussions. Over 150 participants attended, and interactive wine-tasting activities were organized to promote engagement among attendees.
The 2024 conference, themed "Impactful Technologies and Computer-Assisted Language Learning," will be co-organized by National Taichung University of Education and Taiwan CALL on May 16-17, 2024. The event will feature distinguished international scholars in the field of technology-enhanced language learning and will include the presentation of academic papers that provide solid theoretical foundations and practical teaching applications. The conference expects to attract over 200 participants and aims to offer diverse and enriching content.
3. Commitment
The association is committed to improving research quality and contributing to global academic research, particularly in the context of how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping language learning. With collective effort from all members, the association is advancing its international presence, focusing on three key objectives:
1. Organizing the annual international academic conference.
2. Establishing alliances with international academic conferences and associations (e.g., ReCALL, CALL, EuroCALL).
3. Planning and publishing high-quality TELL/CALL journals.
